Shaping the Future Together
Heidelberg University Hospital (UKHD) and Heidelberg Medical Faculty at Heidelberg University are among Europe’s leading centres of academic medicine. Together, we combine outstanding patient care, world-class research and innovative teaching with a clear ambition: to actively shape the medicine of tomorrow.
Our mission extends far beyond the boundaries of our campus. We see ourselves as part of a strong scientific and medical ecosystem that rapidly translates new discoveries into clinical practice, drives innovation and develops solutions to the major challenges facing healthcare.
On Heidelberg’s medical campus, experts in patient care, research and teaching work side by side. This is where personalized therapies, digital technologies and new interprofessional approaches to patient care are developed. Translation, digitalization and artificial intelligence are among our strategic priorities, alongside close collaboration across disciplines, institutions and organizational boundaries.
Through institutions such as the National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) Heidelberg, the Hopp Children's Cancer Center Heidelberg (KiTZ), the Health + Life Science Alliance Heidelberg Mannheim, and numerous other national and international partnerships, Heidelberg University Hospital and Heidelberg Medical Faculty create an environment in which scientific excellence, translation and innovation work hand in hand.
The year 2025 was characterized by preparations for a major new phase of development. With the launch of the alliance between Heidelberg University Hospital and Mannheim University Hospital on 1 January 2026, followed by the planned merger of the two medical faculties on 1 January 2027, a new chapter in academic medicine is beginning in the Rhine–Neckar Metropolitan Region.
The alliance creates new opportunities to integrate patient care, research, teaching and innovation even more closely, strategically combine complementary strengths, and actively shape the future of academic medicine.
In doing so, we are laying the foundation for a centre of academic medicine that combines scientific excellence, innovative patient care and social responsibility – for the benefit of people in our region and far beyond.
