Avoiding amputations
Every year parts of the lower extremities of about 50,000 persons are amputated in Germany. Some of these interventions could be avoided with an innovative procedure developed by the Heidelberg experts in Vascular Surgery and Plastic Surgery. Using a modern OP microscope, closed vessels in the legs can be re-opened, blood circulation can be improved and chronic wounds as well as tissue defects can be closed by transplanting tissue. The Dietmar Hopp Stiftung has provided 184,000 euros to finance the technical equipment.

Employees at the Center for Infectiology at UKHD and EMBL have succeeded for the first time in depicting the HI virus during transport into the nucleus of the infected cell. It was unclear to date how the viral genetic material moved from the capsid into the cell nucleus, where it triggers the formation of new viruses. Electron tomography images show: the protein envelope of the virus passes through the nucleus pores as a whole and only breaks apart inside the nucleus of the cell, where it releases the genetic information of the virus.
