Dear readers,
Prof. Dr. Dr. Jürgen Debus
Chairman of the Board
Chief Medical Director
2024 was a year that set the course for the future – for Heidelberg University Hospital as well as for the entire Rhine-Neckar region.
Despite complex economic, political, and social conditions, Heidelberg University Hospital (UKHD) and Heidelberg University's Medical Faculty (MFHD) achieved remarkable success in clinical care, research, teaching, and infrastructure development.
We have been working continuously on preparations for the planned merger of the UKHD with Mannheim University Medical Center. This merger will open up new opportunities for interdisciplinary care, data-driven research, and patient-centered advancement of cutting-edge medicine. With the goal of realizing the merger on January 1, 2026, we are continuing to pursue this process with prudence, transparency, and the active participation of our employees at both locations.

At the same time, we have invested heavily in the future at the Heidelberg Medical Campus. Construction projects such as the new Heart Center with the Informatics for Life research institute, the integration of the Kidney Center into the Center for Internal Medicine, and the progress made on the Hopp Children's Cancer Center Heidelberg KiTZ are strengthening the structures for excellent medicine and research.

Director of Nursing
Prof. Dr. Michael Boutros
Dean of the Heidelberg Medical Faculty
The year 2024 was inextricably linked to the new framework conditions of the Hospital Improvement Act (KHVVG). This law gives us an expanded coordination role in the healthcare region. We are aligning the hospital to meet this greater responsibility in order to optimize patient management in terms of quality focus and expand the scope for top-quality care in the cooperation network.
In order to provide patients with top-level care, we at the UKHD are continuously working to further improve our services. Among other things, this is reflected in the so-called “innovation rooms” initiated by the nursing service at the UKHD. In the innovation rooms, employees develop and implement ideas on an interprofessional basis. With an innovative working environment, we also create attractive development opportunities for the members of our team. We value this – as well as the training, recruitment, and development of talent.
Prof. Dr. Markus Weigand
Deputy Chief Medical Director
We would like to express our special thanks to our more than 14,000 employees. Whether in nursing, medical services, administration, research, or teaching – their expertise, dedication, and humanity form the foundation of our actions and our success.
We would also like to thank our partners in science, politics, business, and society who stand by us with their trust and support.
